Gion Matsuri

This is one of the most famous and oldest “festivals” in Japan since the 9th century, originally (and still in part) a purification ritual to appease the gods thought to cause fire, floods and earthquakes (see wikipedia for example). It takes the whole month of July every year with a climax of parade on July 17. We can suggest 14, 15 or 16 for your walk in the downtown area, when it is not jam-packed too much, so as to take a close look at many things including traditional art-crafts originally created by craftsmen in Kyoto, and “Yamaboko” or “Hoko” floats with decorations partly originating from ancient west Asia via the Silk Road.

Hotel reservation is available from our travel agency, JTB, in the downtown Kyoto, along the path of the parade.

If you are to book a hotel on you own, you are strongly recommended to do so as early as possible, even months before.
